The Escalante Racer series, released in 2018, attracted attention with its limited-edition designs featuring motifs of cities around the world, such as New York and Aloha (Hawaii), and was so popular that it quickly sold out. It was later added to the lineup as a standard model, and after its first major update last year, it was newly released as the Escalante Racer 2.

Now, the long-awaited "Escalante Racer 2" has been reissued as a "TOKYO" design, with a global simultaneous release scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2025. The reissue model follows the original design, with a black upper and gold accents, evoking the Tokyo cityscape, where tradition and innovation blend. The sophisticated design is appealing.

The Escalante Racer 2 TOKYO offers the performance you expect from ALTRA and a unique design. Wear this special pair of shoes and enjoy your running life even more.

This model features ALTRA's thinnest cushioning of all road shoes, at 22mm, and prioritizes lightweight comfort and a great sense of ground contact. It continues to feature a highly breathable knit upper, making it suitable for Japan's humid climate. It dries quickly, even on rainy days, and is dry by the next day, so you can wear it without worrying about the weather. It activates natural foot movement, making it ideal for those who want to achieve a barefoot running experience. It's also recommended for walking and gym training, making it suitable for a wide range of activities.

Eight years after its release, the updated Escalante Racer 2 maintains the ALTRA identity while improving in three key areas.

 1. Improved Grip
The previous model's toe-shaped outsole design has been changed to a sole pattern that is renowned for its durability and grip. While maintaining a lightweight design, grip has been improved by reducing the rubber in the midfoot area.
 2. Last Change
The original shoe had a classic design and a roomy construction, but to achieve an even more relaxed fit, the last has been changed from "STANDARD" to "Original." There is more room in the heel and instep, providing a more comfortable fit.
 3. Improved stability : The forefoot has been redesigned to resemble the bottom of a boat, minimizing side-to-side movement when landing. While it's hard to tell from the outside, the stability when you put your foot in is even greater than in the previous model, allowing you to run with confidence.

The Escalante Racer 2 is a versatile shoe for a variety of activities, from running to walking to gym training.

Tips for choosing the right size

This shoe features the "Original" foot shape design, which is the most roomy among the ALTRA models, so if you wear a "slim" design such as Rivera, choose the same size or half a size down.

As a concrete guideline, if your foot length is 28.3cm (right) / 27.9cm (left) and your foot circumference is 26.4cm (right) / 26.0cm (left), our staff wears a US 11.5 (29.5cm) and has generally found the same size as previous Escalante Racers to fit without any issues. For those who wear previous Escalante Racers, there are generally no issues with the same size.

For first-time visitors

STRIDE LAB recommends a size that allows approximately 1.3cm of room at the toes, as this is the size that is least likely to cause problems. *For example, if your actual measurement (length from heel to toe) is 25.0cm, adding 1.3cm of room would result in a size of 26.3cm, so we recommend choosing a size equivalent to 26.5cm.

About Altra

Why do you need new shoes now?

With so many shoe brands available today, it's already difficult to know which shoes to choose, so do we really need another new shoe brand? This was a big question that came to mind before I started ALTRA. With my experience as a former long-distance runner for the US national team and as a manager of a running shop, I had been pleading for many years with various major shoe manufacturers to create shoes that would "reduce heel strike" in a "natural state," but unfortunately, I had never found a shoe that satisfied me.

After trying out a number of shoes that had been modified to a "zero drop" state by shaving down the heel and recommending them to runners, he began to see clear improvements from runners with disabilities and users who had given up running, which led to the creation of the "ZERO DROP" prototype. Shortly thereafter, the book "Born To Run" became a huge hit across the United States, and barefoot running became widely known.

I want to create shoes that prevent heel strikes

My father injured his knee while playing American football when he was a student. The doctor told him he would never be able to run again. After that, my father taught himself how to run without putting too much impact on his knee, and began practicing running without heel strike. By continuing this, he gradually became better at running, and was even able to win prizes in major marathons. He now owns a running shop in the Rocky Mountains as a shoe specialist.

It has been 20 years since we opened our running shop, but there are still no kinematically natural or "correct" shoes, and we have not been able to provide the best shoes for our clients.
We did a lot of research and as a result we came up with shoes that minimize heel strike to allow for natural body movement.

The concept is the ultimate shoe that allows you to run in a natural way.

After that, through repeated trial and error with various experts, our passion led to the creation of a single shoe: the ALTRA Zero Drop Shoe. We had to overcome many obstacles to get to this point. Throughout it all, we remained true to our unwavering concept of creating shoes that allow people to run in a natural way. We hope to continue this passion and spread the joy of running.
