When I walked the long Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), I made my own food cozy (thermal cover) and walked the PCT.

I made simple meals by putting freeze-dried food in boiled water or reusing commercially available outdoor food containers and putting ramen noodles and powdered mashed potatoes inside.
Since my cooking style was mainly focused on keeping food warm, I was able to significantly reduce my fuel gas consumption. While other hikers were buying gas canisters every time they went down to town, I only bought one about once a month.

I found the Food Cozy to be an effective tool for saving fuel on the trail.

The sample shown in the PCT photo had already been tested using lightweight, high-performance supercritical foam insulation, and we felt that it had the best balance of heat retention and light weight. However, while considering the size of American dry food packaging and the size of Japanese packaging, we thought that if the size was compatible with American packaging, it would also be possible to store a 250-size cooker.

The flap is buckled so that it can be used as a handle holder, and the buckle and belt can be used to fasten it securely, so I have gotten rid of my stuff sack and now store and carry my entire cooking system in this food cozy.

■ Heat retention design

All heat-generating objects emit infrared rays. The human body also emits infrared rays, but we believe that the insulating layer plays an even more important role in retaining heat, so we decided to focus on insulating materials in our design.

Food cozies made with aluminum foil air cushions for construction are common on the market, but they have several issues. Because they have many aluminum layers, heat is easily absorbed by the aluminum in the initial stage of heat storage, and heat can escape rapidly the moment a food is placed in the cozie, especially in cold temperatures. Also, the large air layer in the air cushion causes convection inside, which promotes heat exchange with the outside air. Just as air mattresses tend to get cold in winter, these cozies have the disadvantage of easily losing internal heat in cold outdoor environments.

To maximize insulation performance, vacuum insulation like that used in thermoses is ideal to prevent heat conduction, but we thought that closed-cell foam sponge would be a suitable insulation material as it is lightweight and easy to handle. Because it is important to prevent air convection, we used a closed-cell (closed-cell) sponge manufactured in a supercritical state. The supercritical state is a manufacturing method in which polyethylene resin is put into a special state under high temperature and pressure, and then the air pressure is reduced to form a fine bubble structure. This prevents impurities from being mixed into the base material, resulting in a sponge that is stable, lightweight, and durable. Furthermore, because it is not urethane foam, there is no risk of deterioration due to hydrolysis.

Furthermore, we considered whether it was possible to retain heat by reflecting infrared rays without increasing weight, and decided to use a material with infrared reflectivity. As there were concerns about deterioration due to the bending that is unique to aluminum when using aluminum foil air cushions for construction, we used a highly flexible aluminum-deposited polyethylene film for the inside surface. As there are various types of this film, we ordered multiple samples and conducted durability tests to select one with the optimal balance.

■Body
Unusually for a MIYAGEN product, this is a flat and simple pattern design. To reduce cold spots, the design minimizes the number of stitches. As a result, it is less able to stand on its own, but functionality is the priority in the design.

It can also store commonly sold food packaging with some room to spare. It can also hold two 350ml cans of beer. If you chill the beer in advance and add ice packs, it will stay cold overnight. Taking advantage of its excellent thermal insulation properties, it can also be used as an insulated bag.

Additionally, a strap loop on the side makes it easy to carry a cold drink, making it ideal for outdoor events like festivals.

■FlapThe flap can be turned inside out and used as a handle.The flap is also insulated, so your hands will stay warm even in winter.

The length of the belt is adjustable so that it can be easily operated even while wearing gloves.In addition, by adjusting the belt, it is possible to store the cooker and carry it around.
