In search of true 100% wool
We thought that wool, a natural material, was an excellent choice for outdoor wear, and in order to expand the possibilities of wool products at STATIC, we visited Oshu, Aichi, a wool fabric producing area.
That's when I came across a wool product with a soft and fluffy touch I'd never experienced before. I tried it on and it felt incredibly comfortable. To be honest, it was so different from any wool product I'd ever worn before that I wondered if it was really wool. This product was actually made from wool fabric that hadn't been shrink-proofed. It hadn't even been dyed, and I was amazed at how gentle the natural wool fibers felt against my skin.
However, since it is not shrink-proof, it will shrink with each wash, making it difficult to wear casually as everyday clothing. What's more, it seems that fabric stores that make unshrunk, undyed fabrics have already gone out of business...
What is shrink-proofing?
Shrinkage prevention processing is an essential process for woolen clothing.
While the commonly used "chlorine resin processing" is cost-effective, I felt something was off when I learned that the shrink-proofing process releases organic chlorine compounds that are known to have a negative impact on the environment, and that the fibers are covered in resin.
Chlorine resin treatment removes the scales on the surface of wool fibers, which have water-repellent and moisture-regulating properties. In other words, shrinkage prevention leads to a decrease in the functionality of wool fibers. Furthermore, doesn't covering the fibers with resins such as nylon also decrease the functionality of wool? Questions about biodegradability also arise. I've also heard that the resins cause the fabric to become stiffer with each use.
Is there a shrink-proofing method that leaves the scales? Is there a shrink-proofing method that doesn't use resin?
Eco-friendly shrink-proof processing
The non-chlorine resin shrink-proofing process does not remove the scales, but rather converts the hydrophobic scales to hydrophilic ones, and then attaches hybrid collagen to prevent the scales from tangling together, which causes shrinkage. It also does not use resin.
In terms of biodegradability, it is safer than chlorine resin processing, and the fabric that touches the skin is made only of wool fiber, not resin. Also, by leaving the scales that control wool's adjustability, we have been able to create a wool product that makes the most of the original functions of wool fiber. It can be said to be an eco-friendly shrink-resistant product that makes the most of wool fiber as much as possible.
I will never forget the words of a developer at a shrink-proofing factory who told me, "Since we don't use chlorine, it's safe for the health of our employees."
