NEMOの物語は創業者のカム・ブレンシンガーが「世界で最も天候が悪い場所」として知られるワシントン山の中腹で、劣悪なビビィサックの中で嵐に耐えながら、5時間も眠れずに過ごしたその夜に始まりました。その経験から、カムは冒険を最大限に楽しめるよう、デザインと快適性、信頼性を兼ね備えたギアの必要性を痛感しました。翌朝、下山すると同時にそのアイデアを実現するために行動を起こす決意を固めました。

カムはロードアイランド・スクール・オブ・デザイン（RISD）を卒業してわずか3日後に、NEMO Equipmentを創設しました。NEMO（New England Mountain Outfitters）という名前は、彼の故郷ニューイングランドへの敬意と、ジュール・ヴェルヌのSF小説『海底2万マイル』に登場するキャプテン・ニモに由来しています。
